Lean on Me, the Baobab Tree

Inspired by the African baobab, often referred to as the “Tree of Life,” the piece reflects the tree’s role as a vital source of water, shelter, and nourishment within its ecosystem.

Constructed from layered steel, the sculpture features more than 20 animal species native to the African savannah, integrated in shallow relief throughout the bark. The piece is designed to be experienced both around and through—visitors can move around the structure and walk inside, where a starry night sky lines the interior panels alongside mirrored stainless steel that reflects the people passing through.

At the crown, clusters of cast glass leaves and stainless steel fruit emerge from the canopy, catching light and adding a sense of movement, color and life to the form.
