Shawnee Mission Art 9

Art Nine: Public Sculpture SeriesShawnee Mission Park, Kansas
Commissioned by Johnson County Parks & Recreation | 2024
As part of the Art Nine initiative, I was one of four artists selected to create site-specific sculptures for installation throughout the newly developed disc golf course at Shawnee Mission Park in Kansas. Eleven sculptures in total were installed to form an engaging, art-filled trail through the natural landscape.
My contribution included three distinct works—each inspired by native flora and fauna, designed to enhance the outdoor environment and connect visitors with art in unexpected places.

Echinacea UmbrellaLocation: Near Hole 5 Tee
Three towering echinacea flowers bloom in vivid color, fabricated from weathered steel and painted stainless steel. Standing between 6 and 9 feet tall, each flower features laser-cut petals and fluorescent acrylic panels that catch the sunlight and cast dynamic shadows on the ground. A single bee perches atop the tallest bloom—an homage to the critical role pollinators play in sustaining life.

Spirit of the BrookLocation: Near Hole 1 Tee
This sculpture depicts a stylized dragonfly in motion—its stainless steel wings stretching nearly 8 feet wide, with reflective acrylic insets that mirror the surrounding landscape. Suspended above abstracted grass and cattails, the dragonfly’s body is painted in shimmering blues and greens. The piece celebrates the grace and ecological importance of insects in freshwater environments.

Over the RainbowLocation: Near Hole 3 Tee
An 18-foot-wide, 9-foot-tall archway serves as a rainbow-colored trellis. Vining shapes twist up the structure, and twelve painted stainless steel butterflies—each representing a color of the rainbow—rest above the arch. Designed to support live plant growth, the sculpture bridges nature and art, inviting interaction and wonder.

These sculptures are part of a long-term effort by Johnson County Parks & Recreation to integrate art into public spaces—enriching the experience of parkgoers, engaging families and disc golfers, and creating moments of connection between people, art, and nature.
